First Utility

First Utility offer three tariffs for households, which include a range of benefits. Common features include online account management, payment by Direct Debit, and no cancellation fee for switching suppliers. First Utility also provide customers with some of the largest dual-fuel discounts on the market, which are given by way of a direct payment from the company at the end of every year.

First Utility’s main tariff is Smart as Standard, which offers variable rates and free installation of a Smart Meter. The Smart Meter allows First Utility to take automatic meter readings, which does away with the uncertainty of estimated billing, and makes sure that you only pay for what you use. Citing research by the Energy Saving Trust, First Utility claim that use of a Smart Meter can save you 10% on your energy bills. On top of that, after signing up you’ll also receive a free Energy Saving Plan, which can help make your home as energy efficient as possible and drive down your bills even further.

If you don’t want to have a Smart Meter installed, but would still like the flexibility of variable rate pricing, then you should opt for First Utility’s iSave tariff. First Utility claim that this is the cheapest dual-fuel tariff in the UK, with customer’s receiving a discount payment at the end of their first year with the company, and every year after that. Although this tariff doesn’t include automatic meter readings, First Utility have developed a clever system to help you avoid estimated billing. At the end of each month, First Utility will email you with your estimated charges. By clicking on a link in the email, you can enter a meter reading online, which makes sure that you’re only billed for your actual energy consumption.

Finally, First Utility offers the iSave Fixed tariff, which locks down prices for a year or more. It works in exactly the same way as the iSave tariff, and unlike most fixed rate packages, there’s no cancellation fee if you decide to exit early.
